The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is Kerala’s most prestigious and internationally renowned snake boat race, held annually on the scenic Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha. Watch massive Chundan Vallams (snake boats) race across the backwaters as hundreds of synchronized oarsmen compete amidst cheering crowds, traditional Vanchipattu songs, and vibrant cultural celebrations.

The 72nd Nehru Trophy Boat Race 2026 promises another spectacular celebration of Kerala’s rich backwater heritage and sporting tradition. Conducted on the picturesque Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, this internationally acclaimed event attracts thousands of spectators from across India and abroad every year.

More than 70 traditional boats, including the magnificent Chundan Vallams (Snake Boats), compete in thrilling races powered by hundreds of skilled oarsmen rowing in perfect synchronization to the rhythm of traditional Vanchipattu (Boat Songs).

The race was first organized in 1952 to commemorate the visit of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who was so impressed by the spectacle that he instituted the famous Nehru Trophy.
