Mangalamkunnu Elephant Camp
Mangalamkunnu Elephant Camp, located in the Mangalamkunnu village near Ottapalam, is one of Kerala’s most renowned private elephant camps. Home to more than a dozen well-trained elephants, it has played a vital role in Kerala’s temple festivals, particularly Thrissur Pooram and Nemmara Vela.
This is where some of the state’s largest and most decorated elephants are housed, trained, and looked after. Visitors can observe them being bathed, fed, or even taken for training walks. Managed by the Mangalamkunnu Tharavadu, this camp is not a commercial zoo, but a deeply respected tradition and symbol of Kerala’s love for elephants.
Cultural travelers, animal lovers, and photographers will find this site deeply rewarding and unique. It also sheds light on Kerala’s elephant management traditions, care systems, and religious symbolism.
