Overview

Sabari Ashramam

Sabari Ashramam is a lesser-known yet historically rich destination located in Palakkad district, Kerala, that holds a deep connection to India’s freedom movement and the Gandhian way of life. Founded in 1923 by freedom fighter K. P. Kesava Menon with the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi, this spiritual and political retreat was once the epicenter of Gandhian activities in Kerala.

Situated near Akathethara, just a few kilometers from Palakkad town, Sabari Ashramam was modeled after Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat and served as a hub for training freedom fighters, spreading khadi and swadeshi ideals, and promoting rural development.

Today, the ashram still resonates with the spirit of simplicity, truth, and non-violence. It is a must-visit heritage spot in Palakkad for history buffs, students, and those interested in Gandhian philosophy and India’s freedom struggle.

🕊️ Historical Importance

Sabari Ashramam played a critical role in Kerala’s freedom movement. It was the place where volunteers were trained in non-violent resistance and social reforms. The ashram also ran a school, weaving center, and small-scale industry promoting village self-sufficiency.

Many prominent leaders including Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave visited this place, adding to its legacy. The original buildings, khadi charkhas, photographs, and relics are still preserved, making it a heritage tourism destination in Kerala.

🌿 What to Expect During a Visit

Visitors to Sabari Ashramam can walk through serene open spaces dotted with old structures that once buzzed with freedom-fighting activity. A modest museum section showcases:

  • Gandhiji’s photos and letters

  • Vintage khadi spinning wheels

  • Freedom movement documentation

  • Living quarters and prayer halls

  • A small library with Gandhian literature

The overall atmosphere is calm and reflective, perfect for school trips or those on a heritage trail.

🌄 Best Time to Visit

Sabari Ashramam can be visited year-round. The months between November and March offer pleasant weather. Special events on Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2) and Independence Day see increased footfall and commemorative programs.
