Varikkasseri Mana
Varikkasseri Mana, located in Manissery near Ottapalam, is one of the grandest and best-preserved traditional Namboothiri ancestral homes (Illams) in Kerala. Built in 1902, this architectural gem is famed not only for its cultural significance but also as a top film shooting location in Kerala.
The mana features impressive laterite stone walls, red-tiled roofs, a majestic nalukettu (courtyard), and intricately carved wooden pillars and ceilings. It has served as the backdrop for over 100 Malayalam films, including classics like Devasuram, Aaraam Thampuran, and Rappakal.
Owned by the Varikkasseri family and partially open to visitors, it offers an immersive view into Kerala’s aristocratic Brahmin heritage. The blend of cinematic charm and real-life architecture makes this a must-visit for heritage travelers and film buffs alike.
