Overview

Ananganmala

Ananganmala, also known as Anangan Mountain, is one of the lesser-known but stunning natural retreats in the Palakkad district of Kerala. Nestled near the town of Ottapalam, this mountain and its surrounding reserve forest area are rich in biodiversity, mythology, and panoramic views, offering an offbeat trekking experience and ecological richness far from commercial tourism.

The Ananganmala Ecotourism Project, developed under the Kerala Forest Department, aims to promote sustainable tourism while conserving the unique dry deciduous forest ecosystem that surrounds the hill. A trek up Ananganmala takes visitors through scenic landscapes, scrub forests, rare plant species, and birdlife, culminating in a breath-taking view from the top of the hillock.

According to local folklore, Anangan, a divine figure, meditated on this mountain, giving it the name “Ananganmala” (Anangan’s Hill). The silence, rustic beauty, and wilderness still give it an aura of mystique. Unlike the misty mountains of Munnar or the tourist-heavy trails of Wayanad, Ananganmala remains a peaceful haven, ideal for nature lovers and those seeking solitude in nature.
