Anchuvilakku
Anchuvilakku, located in the heart of Palakkad town, is a striking historical monument that tells the tale of the region’s rich cultural and architectural past. Literally meaning “Five Lamps”, this granite lamp post with five distinct lamps on top stands as a symbol of colonial-era town planning and civic development. It is situated right in front of the Palakkad Fort, near Rappadi, the Fort Maidan, and close to Vatika and Silavatika Gardens, making it a landmark hub in the city.
Constructed during the rule of Diwan Madhava Rao of Travancore in the 19th century, Anchuvilakku is a beautiful blend of functionality and art. The pillar once served as a street lamp that guided people passing through the bustling marketplace in front of the fort. At night, all five lamps were lit, casting a glow that kept the commercial and social life vibrant even after dusk.
Today, while the lamps are mostly symbolic, the monument is revered as a heritage icon and is frequently photographed by tourists and history lovers visiting Palakkad Fort. The area around Anchuvilakku has transformed into a social and cultural gathering point, surrounded by gardens, walkways, street food vendors, and occasional art and book fairs.
Anchuvilakku represents more than just a lamp post—it symbolizes a time when Palakkad grew from a military and agrarian base into a culturally vibrant town under royal and British influence.
