Overview

Vellinezhi is a culturally significant village in Palakkad district, Kerala, widely known as a historic centre of Kathakali and classical art traditions. The village has produced many renowned Kathakali artists and scholars, earning it a respected place in Kerala’s performing arts heritage.

Surrounded by paddy fields, coconut groves, and a peaceful rural environment, Vellinezhi beautifully blends artistic legacy with traditional village life. The presence of ancient temples, cultural institutions, and training centres makes Vellinezhi an important destination for art lovers, students, researchers, and cultural tourists exploring Palakkad’s heritage.

It is famous “Kalagramam” (art village) renowned for its rich Kathakali heritage, especially the refined Kalluvazhi Chitta style, systematized by Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon. The village hosts many art forms, with its families producing numerous artists and craftsmen for Kathakali costumes, ornaments (Koppu), and percussion, centered around the cultural patronage of the Olappamanna Mana. It’s a vital hub for preserving these traditional arts, with training centers and historical significance.
