Kathakali Sadanam – Gandhi Seva Sadan Kathakali Academy, Kathakali Sadanam, Palakkad Kathakali school
Gandhi Seva Sadan Kathakali & Classic Arts Academy, popularly known as Kathakali Sadanam, is a world-renowned center for traditional Kalaripayattu, Kathakali, and classical art training in Perur village, near Ottapalam, Palakkad district, Kerala. Founded in 1953 by freedom fighter K. Kumaran, it is the third-oldest institution dedicated to Kathakali training in Kerala, after Kerala Kalamandalam and PSV Natyasangham.
Set on a beautiful 10-acre riverside campus by the Bharathapuzha River, the academy offers residential gurukula-style training for dedicated students and short-term programs for visitors and international learners. Courses span Kathakali dance, music, chenda/maddalam percussion, make-up (chutti), and stage management.
Renowned Kathakali gurus—including Padma Shri Keezhpadam Kumaran Nair, Thekkinkattil Ramunni Nair, and Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair—have taught here, shaping generations of performers like Sadanam Krishnankutty, Sadanam Balakrishnan, Sadanam Ramankutty, and Sadanam Vasudevan.
With its rich curriculum and cultural depth, Gandhi Seva Sadan is a top destination for aspirants, culture enthusiasts, and world travelers eager to plunge deep into Kerala’s classical performing arts heritage.
