Palakkad Fort is one of Kerala’s most iconic heritage monuments and among the best-preserved forts in South India. Situated in the center of Palakkad town, the fort was built by Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1766 to protect the strategic Palakkad Gap, an important passage through the Western Ghats. The British captured the fort in 1790 and later strengthened parts of the structure, giving it both Mysorean and colonial architectural influences. Today, it is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as a protected monument.

Constructed primarily from massive granite blocks, the square-shaped fort is surrounded by a broad moat, sturdy bastions, and landscaped gardens. Inside the fort, visitors can explore the Archaeological Museum, the Anjaneya (Hanuman) Temple, historic stone structures, and peaceful walking paths. The nearby Kotta Maidanam (Fort Grounds) is a popular venue for public events, exhibitions, sports activities, and cultural programs.

Whether you’re interested in Kerala’s military history, architectural heritage, or simply looking for a relaxing place to walk amid greenery, Palakkad Fort offers an unforgettable experience. Its scenic surroundings, historical importance, and well-maintained premises make it one of the top tourist attractions in Palakkad.
